Plans for a major new University of Cumbria campus in Carlisle city centre have taken another step forward.

The Borderlands Partnership Board met on 7 October, to consider an updated business case for the University of Cumbria – Carlisle Citadels project. This was approved by the Board and includes additional Borderlands Deal funding of £12.117m, as part of an updated funding package. The approval was subject to the confirmation of the full funding package and award of the construction contract by the University of Cumbria.
Carlisle Citadels is the largest single project within the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal. The delivery could see the creation of a flagship university campus, creating new teaching facilities, business innovation space and opportunities for local people and businesses.
The Board reviewed the proposed changes and new business case for the project. The new proposal follows extensive work by the University of Cumbria to address the cost challenges with the project since it was first approved. The Borderlands Partnership have worked closely with partners in considering options for additional funding.
The project aims to increase access to higher education, support economic growth, attract investment and bring new life to a prominent gateway site in Carlisle city centre. The development is also expected to increase footfall, support local businesses and strengthen the city's role as a centre for skills, innovation and culture.
Work will now continue to confirm the funding package and finalise the funding arrangements before the main construction work can begin.
