At a meeting of Northumberland Full Council on November 4th, members agreed a revised funding contribution of  £7.5m towards the £36m scheme on Eastern Lane.

It comes after the Borderlands Partnership board agreed a revised grant of £28.5m towards the scheme. This a key project within the Borderlands Deal, part of the Destination Borderlands theme. The transformed venue is due to open in Spring 2029 and it’s forecast to attract 115,000 visitors each year by 2032, boosting the local economy.

Council Leader Glen Sanderson, who is also a Borderlands Partnership Board Member, said:

"This is a hugely significant milestone for this scheme which we have been working towards for some time. The new building will be another landmark for the town, bringing in thousands of visitors and boosting the wider economy.

Thanks must go to everyone who has supported our ongoing ambitions for the Berwick area. As well as The Maltings we've had major investment in a new leisure centre, school improvements, its bridges and the historic Barracks.

Now all the funding is in place for The Maltings we can look forward to works on this new building getting underway in the coming weeks."

Scott Sherrard, Chair of the Maltings (Berwick) Trust, said:

"We are delighted that yesterday the Full Council meeting at Northumberland County Council approved the revised funding package for the new Maltings venue on Eastern Lane. This follows an equally welcome funding boost for its construction from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal board.

These important decisions mean that a start can be made on site, working to a two-year schedule that at last gives us some confidence that we can plan to open this exciting new venue for Berwick and the surrounding regions in Spring 2029. “
