Borders Railway Extension Feasibility Study
Exploring options to extend the Borders Railway to Carlisle
Led by Scottish Borders Council, this feasibility study will assess the potential benefits and challenges of extending the Borders Railway from its current terminus at Tweedbank to Carlisle. The Waverley route, partially reopened from Edinburgh to Tweedbank in 2015, restored rail services to the Scottish Borders for the first time since the 1960s.
The study will develop a business case that examines potential station locations, the viability of freight traffic, and other factors critical to future investment. This business case will inform decisions by the UK and Scottish Governments on funding any subsequent phases of construction and development.
