Improving connectivity with high speed rail network

Strengthening Carlisle’s position in the national rail network, this investment will improve connectivity to, from and within the Borderlands region, whilst future-proofing the station for accommodating future HS2 services.

This project will improve connectivity and access for Carlisle and the Borderlands. By improving access, shops and cafés, facilities and onward travel options at Carlisle Railway Station, it will boost the appeal of the city centre and support passenger growth.

The Station redevelopment will:

  • Maximise this historic asset by respecting its heritage significance and architecture

  • Encourage investment, improving the commercial opportunities of the station and the wider city area

  • Support passenger growth by improving the station and its facilities for all users

  • Grow the regional role of the station by prioritising usability and accessibility, as well as improving parking and drop-off facilities

  • Create a gateway by providing high-quality entrances and exits to the station, enhancing historic buildings, encouraging visitors, and better connecting to and showcasing the city

  • Future-proof the station ensuring accessibility by greener forms of transport and by making it safer to use

At the heart of the city's transformation

Carlisle Railway Station, located in the city centre, is a key part of the national rail network. It accommodates more than two million passengers every year and acts as a major interchange for the entire Borderlands region.

The Station Gateway project is at the heart of the wider transformation of Carlisle City Centre, taking place over the next five years to ensure that Carlisle reaches its full potential as the hub of the Borderlands area.

To date £100 million of investment has been secured for Carlisle.
